So today James L. Jones, National Security Adviser to President Obama, and oh yeah a Republican once sought after by George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice as Deputy Secretary of State, declared that “Obama is having greater success taking terrorists out of commission than Bush did”. It appears that it was, in fact, a good idea for the leader of the free world to actually lead on the issue of terrorism instead of making enemies with every nation that was seemingly against us in this fight. And as the report states, it turns out that diplomacy and dealing with leaders of other nations to enhance working relationships between national and international law enforcement agencies was a good idea after all.
In his report Jones said that ‘we are seeing results that indicate more captures, more deaths of radical leaders and a kind of a global coming-together by the fact that this is a threat to not only the United States but to the world at-large and the world is moving toward doing something about it.’ Jones also added, ‘The numbers of high value targets that we are successfully reaching out to or identifying through good intelligence from both the CIA and intelligence agencies from US allies has made the difference… We have better human intelligence; we know where the terrorists are moving. Because of the dialogue and the tone of the dialogue between us and our friends and allies…the trend line against terrorism is positive, and that s what we want. If we have a positive trend line we have a safer country.’
What we must keep in mind is that Islamic fundamentalism is a threat to not only the United States, but to the entire global community (including many Muslim majority nations). What many Americans either fail to realize, or refuse to admit, is that we are not at war against Islam, we are at war against extremists who distort the teachings of Islam for political reasons. And as long as we not only alienated majority Muslim countries, as well as those who have traditionally been our allies, as was the status quo under Republican rule, we had no chance of winning the war on terror. If we can work along side the global community, who are just as affected by Islamic terrorism as we are (see Spain, Israel, Indonesia, England, Russia, etc.), we can and will stifle the allure of martyrdom and “defense against the infidels” that had become so popular in the Middle East as a result of American aggression in the region during the George W. Bush era. Machismo and bluster are no substitute for smart and level-headed security policy- something that this country sorely lacked over the last several years.
