Unofficial Taxation- A single Example

As mentioned in previous posts, I am in the automotive repair industry. On your dash there are many warning light displays, designed to inform you when something is wrong with your vehicle or when you are negligent of proper safety protocols- door ajar and seat belt warning light. The lights are color coded, red needing immediate attention, and yellow for “other” issues. What most people don’t realize is that all of the yellow lights are a creation of our federal bureaucracy. You see, the federal government places emission requirements on all vehicles made after 1995 and that yellow light tells the driver that the vehicle has some emissions related component that is not performing properly. It does not mean the car is releasing excess emissions- only that some component that affects or monitors emissions is not giving the correct electrical response. Much like a defective smoke detector going off does not mean there is a fire.
Simply put- when your yellow check engine (service engine soon, etc…) light comes on and you go to the repair shop or dealer with the fear that your car might have a serious problem and that you will be poorer for the trip– know that you are paying an unofficial tax imposed by your government. Know also that the “repair” that you make does not make your car run better or necessarily cleaner. But somewhere in government a liberal is sleeping better thinking he/she is saving the earth. Perhaps we should try to write off our car repair bills as charitable contributions…
