The Housing Crisis in this country….

The housing crisis in this country is far from over.  The biggest concern is the lack of affordable housing and homelessness on the rise.  There is also the record high of foreclosures, especially in the state of New York.  I live in a borough of New York City, Richmond County has the highest number of foreclosures in the state.  There is supposed to be assistance for homeowners who are on the blink of foreclosure.  It was a part of this highly touted recovery act.

Becoming homeless is a very unpleasant and traumatic experience.  The shelters are limited on space and beds. Then there’s having to rely on the kindness of friends and family members to take you in on a  temporary basis until you can find another place to live.  This is a painful reminder to most people out there that we are one or two paychecks away from being homeless.  It is the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about or acknowledge the fact.  Unless one has been there or is sympathetic to the plight, most people generally don’t want to know you anymore.  You definitely find out who true friends are.

A month ago, my family and I were evicted from our apartment.  It was an illegal basement apartment which I rented believing it was all on the up and up.  I also rented it through a real estate agent which was another kick in the pants.  I am finding out that there are a lot of illegal apartments in the New York City area.  Many fall under the radar and are never detected. Not  unless someone reports it to the Department of Buildings by calling 311.
