Charlie Rangel is off the hook for the moment. Congress struck down a resolution that would have made him give up his chairmanship of the Ways and Means committee. By a strictly partisan vote he is allowed to keep his job, despite cheating on his taxes multiple times. He and Geithner must have used the same Turbo Tax edition.
I find it telling that Ol’ Charlie gave campaign donations to 3 Democrats charged with investigation him. “Charlie’s “angels” on the committee include Congressmen Ben Chandler of Kentucky, G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina and Peter Welch of Vermont. All have received donations from Rangel.” I also find it telling that the Democratic Party, so willing to demand the resignation of a Republican for speaking out of turn during Obama s speech, doesn t deem Ol’ Charlie’s lapses of ethics in the same light. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), no stranger to probes herself, even came out the other day and said that there are a lot of representatives that make mistakes on their taxes. Charlie didn’t make a mistake; he didn’t even claim the monies in the first place. This is the guy who helps write the tax code for Pete’s sake!
Obama and Pelosi both promised to make congress and the presidency the most ethical and transparent in history. Apparently the rest of the Democratic Party didn’t get that memo. Here s a question for you. If the rich don’t pay their fair share of taxes by using loop holes and ol’ Charlie is just “forgetting” 4 million in taxable income does that mean he’s not rich? Not to mention that Charlie writes the loop holes to begin with. He’s the representative for Harlem! Think any of the poor there have 4 million to spare? Think any of those living in the projects of Harlem just “forget” they have 4 million to report on taxes because they are so rich off the public dime? I’d be willing to bet those in the projects don’t forget they have a $20 in their jeans, let alone 4 Million in the bank account off shore.
So in summation, another crooked politician get s cover from his party for lapses in ethics they hammer the other party for. Another political tax cheat get s off while the rest of us ‘normal’ citizens would be arrested. Ask Wesley Snipes, he ll tell you all about the IRS and its treatment of tax cheats.
