Well here is something you won’t read in the Main Stream Media. If you needed proof that the President is power hungry, then read on.
First it was the financial industry, telling them how much they can pay their top executives. Then it was the automotive industry and the 80% share of “Government Motors”. They are trying really hard for the Medical Industry. And mark my words, they have already tried to use the death of Ted Kennedy to forward their plans. Now it’s the Internet. In a CNET article:
“Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.
They’re not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cyber security emergency.”
Of course this has been done behind closed doors of a White House that claims to be the “most transparent in history”, without clearly defining what a “Cyber Security” issue is. Could be a virus, Trojan, DOS, or any other silly thing they make up. Where does it stop? With your personal computer? That classifies as a network if you are behind a router like most homes are. This from a White House that illegally left cookies on your computer if you visited them providing your surfing history to democratic operatives. Don’t forget the fiasco that was flag@whitehouse.gov
Here is the link to the article:

It’s time you woke up and smelled the hot steamy mess that was sold to you under the guise of “Hope and Change”. Hope they don’t change your home computer.

Still at it with the collection of personal information about visitors. This time on social media sites under the guise of presidential records requirements.

Consti…Thank you for a more toned down response this time. Even though we probably disagree on just about everything politically we should be able to have a more civilized debate than we started out having. I think we got off to a bad start. Let’s start over.
I wasn’t referring to going to war as instances of Bush abusing, grabbing power. I recognize that the Democrats are just as complicit on both the wars we are in right now (see John Kerry). My issues with Bush were that he used the biggest crisis in American history, as well as the “War on Terror”, as justification and cover for many unconstitutional and frankly un-American executive decisions.
Just so you know, I too started out as a Republican when I first became interested in politics around 2000. I supported Bush through the lead up to both wars. The point when I started to say “Hey wait a minute” was when we never found WMD, there were never any links uncovered connecting Saddam and 9/11, and when I realized Al Qaeda was never in Iraq until after we invaded. But again this is besides the point.
Bush and Cheney and all those other crooks IMO used every single chance they could to grab power. They systematically ripped apart the constitution and everything in it that separated us from the rest of the world and truly made us the moral leader in the world. At the heart of this was things like suspending habeas corpus, denying suspected terrorists due process and council and all the things that made our justice system the best the world had ever seen. If they were truly dangerous terrorists bent on destroying America, they would have been found guilty (which I am positive most would have been if given trials) even with all the judicial protections that our Constitution offers.
Can I ask you something? Have you ever seen the HBO documentary “John Adams”? Particularly, the first episode, in which John Adams represents the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre, illustrates exactly why our constitutionally guaranteed judicial rights are so important and so telling of the kind of nation and the kind of people we are. I am just as patriotic and loving of this great nation as the next person, which is why I was so concerned with what was going on in the Bush administration. The wars aside, surely you can agree that Bush will go down as one of the most power hungry president’s in our nation’s history. I know this because you so humbly recognized the changes that Congress made to the Cyber Emergence Bill that you were so concerned about.
I still wouldn’t go as far as you in saying that Obama is a power grabbing president, but I can relate to your concern. My wish is for us as Americans to keep an eye towards history and not let our partisan leanings get in the way of facts. I trust you will stay ever vigilant of the Obama administration, which is what makes you a good American, but please keep your criticisms in perspective, particularly concerning the last administration.
For those of you with open minds here is an update to this post. The original language in the bill that would allow the President to take over your private network has been removed. More accurately, it has been re-worded to be more detailed in the type and nature of the network that can be controlled in the case of a Cyber Emergence. Additionally, the language pertaining to exactly what constitutes a Cyber Emergency has been clarified. Gizmodo has the article here: http://gizmodo.com/5350719/president-obama-isnt-actually-trying-to-hijack-the-entire-internet
It’s nice to see that clarification was made on this. Cudo’s for the lawmakers working on the bill. Wonder if the MSM will actually pick up on this change to the proposed legislation.
Really? Fox news and Rush Limbaugh? Obviously you didn t look at any of the links in my article. You won t find Fox News in any of my posts. Or references to that drug addled Limbaugh. That s a laugh riot my friend. So because I am registered republican you automatically assume that those two are my only sources? In fact, the article is about soon to be pending legislation that is not directly related to the war against terror. Or should I say ‘Over seas contingency plans? €
I see a lot of Ashcroft and Rumsfeld in your comments. I ll remind you that almost unanimously it was voted to give the president the power to go to war. Democrats and Republicans alike if you look at the voting record which is public record. Mind you this is not a conventional war like WWI, WWI, or Korea. This is against people hiding behind children, the old, the weak. Hiding in caves and attacking innocent people in their own country. Personally, I saw no need to invade Iraq since the perpetrator was not there to begin with. However your elected officials decided to grant that power.
As for being an Obama hating republican you obviously don t know me. Nor did I vote for Bush either time. You only prove that you make assumptions, and further make my point. Not voting is in of itself an action. I chose not to elect either since neither was worth the vote. If you must know I supported Obama since the Republican Party had lost its way and had also taken advantage of the American people. I was more than willing to give a green-horn senator the chance to prove me wrong. I figured only two years in the Senate and he shouldn t have been as corrupted as say any of them are. Since then he has done nothing that has shown me he meant any of it. Again, the Chicago way. Facta, non verba. “Deeds not words” my friend are what carries weight with me.
I was born in Chicago, raised there. I know the politics, the place, and the people. I also know the neighborhood where Obama was an organizer. You obviously are not a movie buff either since I made a reference to the Untouchables. You know the movie about gangsters in Chicago? I ll give you a little bit of Obama Trivia. According to a Katie Couric Interview his favorite movie is the God Father. Here s the synopsis.
‘Last year, when Katie Couric of CBS asked Obama and John McCain to name their favorite flicks, McCain went with “Viva Zapata,” where Brando (a bipartisan favorite), dies for his country. Obama went with “The Godfather,” saying, “I love that movie.”
Asked by Couric if he had a favorite scene, the President-to-be said:
“… the opening scene of the first Godfather where the caretaker comes in and, you know, Marlon Brando is sitting there and he’s saying, ‘You disrespected me, you know, and now you want a favor.’
“You know it sets the tone for the whole movie … there’s this combination of old world gentility and you know, ritual with this savagery underneath. It’s all about family.”

I want to thank you my friend since you have done a wonderful job of proving my point of you being a Bush hating liberal. Narrow mined determination to place all blame at his feet. I would suggest you take your assumptions and perhaps read more than the Democratic talking points. Simply being a registered Republican doesn t mean I vote for who Fox News or Rush Limbaugh tells me to. As it sounds by your comments unlike you, I vote my conscious. Not my party s line.
As Sean Connery said in the Untouchables. ‘Here end-ith the lesson. €
Consti.
Wow… well it sounds like you are the only one in this forum that is intellectually bankrupt, and frankly your angry, childish response does not help your cause one bit. Oh and thanks for all the great suggestions but you did nothing to disprove what I said other than to attack me personally. Moreover, there are so many things wrong with your response I don’t even know where to begin.
First, don’t accuse me of cutting and pasting talking points. C’mon… “The Chicago way”, “don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”, “ACORN nuts”? You sound like the editing boards of FOX News and Rush Limbaugh all rapped into one. What a hypocrite you are. I don’t have to cut and paste. Unlike you I can think for myself.
Second, it could hardly be considered a Democratic Congress in the sixteen months following the 9/11 attacks, and before Republicans took over complete control of Congress from January, 2003 until January, 2007. In fact, prior to January 2003 Republicans controlled the House with fairly large majorities while the Senate switched from Democratic to Republican and back to Democratic control. Even when the Democrats did control the Senate it was by a slim one vote margin. Now, I don’t know what your idea of a “Democratic Congress” is but anybody who knows anything about our government could tell you that was certainly not the case. Why don’t you do your research?
Third, even if the Democrats controlled Congress from the time 9/11 happened until the time Republicans took over control of Congress for much of Bush’s presidency, which they didn’t, they in no way “VOTED” for those powers as you so emphatically claim. You want some research? Okay, here’s some research for you:
Oct. 2001- Ashcroft, not Congress, authorized monitoring attorney-client conversations in terrorism investigations (unconstitutional).
Nov. 2001- Bush, not Congress, issued executive order blocking release of presidential records (rule of law?). Bush, not Congress, suspends habeas corpus (unconstitutional) and orders that enemy combatants be tried in military tribunals (rule of law?).
Jan. 2002- Rumsfled, not Congress, declares that enemy combatants have no rights under the Geneva Conventions, a treaty ratified by the United States Senate and signed into law by President Reagan himself (rule of law?).
May 2002- Ashcroft, not Congress, removes restrictions on domestic spying by the FBI, the new guidelines permit monitoring of political and religious groups without probable cause (unconstitutional, rule of law?, using justice dept. for political purposes).
Later that year, the Republicans took over complete control of both houses of Congress with large majorities
July 2003- Under advisement of Vice President Cheney, Robert Novak outs CIA agent Valerie Plame as political payback for her husband opposing the invasion of Iraq (unconstitutional, using justice dept. for political purposes).
Nov. 2003- FBI admits collecting intelligence on anti-war protesters (unconstitutional, using justice for political purposes).
April 2004- First reports of torture and abuse from both Iraq/ Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay (rule of law?).
Aug. 2004- FBI acknowledges collecting intelligence of hundreds of people in at least six states about protests planned for the Republican National Convention (unconstitutional, using justice dept. for political purposes).
And the list goes on and on and on, but I m sure you wouldn t believe it let alone read all of it since it appears that you are the only one who is intellectually bankrupt here.
Let me give you a few suggestions my friend. First, don t accuse someone of something you yourself are blatantly guilty of (being a Bush hating liberal is no different from being an Obama hating conservative). Second, if you refer to the White House you are referring to the President- it s a fact no matter what you say in your defense. Third, don t tell someone to do their research when you don t even do it yourself (PS: FOX News is not research, it s propaganda). Fourth, you will never win an argument by resorting to name-calling. Screaming and yelling and calling people names is just childish and it makes you look like a punk. Fifth, don t say you think it s never a good idea for the President to expand executive power when it’s pretty obvious you supported the President responsible for the single greatest expansion of executive power in the history of this nation. And lastly, I would tell YOU to make sure you never bring a knife to a political gunfight rookie! Now run off and suck your thumb while FOX News tells you you are right about everything and liberals are the scum of the earth. Be careful what you ask for noob.
HAHA!! Another Bush hating liberal. Got news for you the democratic congress VOTED Bush those powers. Perhaps you should do your research before you go off and cut-n-paste the same talking points into comment boxes. As for the UN health reports that have been disproven time and time again. I would suggest you again do your research. Next time you come to an intellectual gun fight don’t bring a knife. That’s the Chicago way, that’s the Obama way. It’s called Google sport, I suggest you use it. Oh! And point out to me where I mention Obama. I said White House, not Obama. Regardless of the moron in the office expanding the power of the President is NEVER a good thing. Crawl back under your intellectually bankrupt rock with the rest of the ACORN nuts.
It’s so funny to hear conservatives claim Obama is grabbing power after sitting idly by as Bush systematically shredded the Constitution, disavowed the rule of law, and stood for justice only when it served political/ personal purposes.
Oh and Erik the Red it is very telling that you say “rumored intention”. It is only being rumored by conservatives like yourself who probably also believe Obama will personally come in to your home and take away your guns and life savings. Why don’t you go read the half dozen or so World Health Organization Reports about the unprecedented scope and spread of this disease instead of adhering to rumors and sensationalism. They’re called facts… You should familiarize yourself with them
Good job. And don’t forget their rumored intention of using the Swine Flu Virus (who many have called man-made) as a reason to declare Martial Law someday down the road.
