Obama: A President of Hope and Promise

Obama backwards phone

(sound of record scratching)

Wait! I meant to say a President of dashed hope and broken promises!

The first three hundred plus days of Barack Obama’s presidency have definitely proven one thing: he has never seen a camera or photo op he didn’t like. He has already been on television more than any President in history at this point in his reign. And look ing at the above picture as an example, having a chance to get a great shot while being in front of our American flag was apparently too tempting to pass up. So much, that he didn’t bother turning the phone around in the correct direction. I wonder if Mr Obama is even talking to someone on the other end?

Now, the majority of his campaign promises while on television or radio are panning out to be just as phoney.

Many were broken merely 60 days into his term. For example:

Broken promise No. 1: ‘Sunlight Before Signing’

This is where he promised transparency by allowing the public five days before signing off on a bill. It only took him until January 29th to break this promise by signing the Ledbetter Act. For those of you naysayers reading this, it is noted that he kept a promise by signing this Act, but negated it by posting a request for public comment after the fact.

Broken Promise No. 2 ‘Capital Gains Tax Elimination’

People who invest in small businesses have only been allowed to exclude 50 percent of that gain from capital gains taxes. While Obama’s $787 billion economic-stimulus package reduces that tax liability – raising the exclusion to 75 percent – it does not eliminate it.(1)

Broken Promise No. 3 ‘Benefits for the Gay Community’

These include a vast array of items. Most were expected to be passed soon after Obama took office but, to many gay people’s surprise (though I’m not sure why), nothing has gotten done. And now many in that community are feeling mighty dissed and confused because their guy has given them a cold shoulder.

Broken Promise No. 4 ‘No Jobs for Lobbyists’

In his Nov. 10, 2007, speech in Des Moines, Iowa, Obama declared:

“I am in this race to tell the corporate lobbyists that their days of setting the agenda in Washington are over. I have done more than any other candidate in this race to take on lobbyists — and won. They have not funded my campaign, they will not run my White House, and they will not drown out the voices of the American people when I am president.” (2)

To make a long story short, it wasn’t long before he allowed at least two dozen exceptions and broke his promise.

Broken Promise No. 5 ‘Sign ‘Freedom of Choice Act’

Strangely, after a consistent voting record regarding matters of abortion, partial-birth abortion, and infanticide, our President has wimped out on this bill. Though this is fine by me, it has left many of his pro-choice supporters dazed and confused and even angry. This is just another case of how it is one thing to “lay low”, knowing that most people don’t pay attention to Senatorial voting records but how, once upon the Big Stage, the same person can change their act due to the fact that more attention is paid to every move.

Broken Promise No. 6 ‘Earmark Reform’

You can read the link if you like. But if not, basically we are reminded that he stated during his campaign that our earmark system is “fraught with abuse” and that he would significantly cut pork spending once in office. Well, in February (one month into his presidency) after the passage of his $787 billion stimulus package before a joint session of Congress, Obama declared “Now, I’m proud that we passed a recovery plan free of earmarks.” There followed a round of hearty laughter – from Republicans and Democrats alike – because he had just claimed that the bill had no pork. In actuality, according to U.S. News and World Report, there were at least eight earmarks in the bill.

The truth of the matter is that the above promises were broken as of mid-March, and these are only a handful compared to the many that I purposely left out due to the fact that I want you to be able to read this in one sitting. In addition, there have been a multitude of others between mid-March and the present day.

If you didn’t feel like thumbing through the links I provided, I don’t blame you. The most important thing you need to grasp is that our current President is following his predecessors’ script perfectly – the script that says:

“Some truth there was, but dash’d and brew’d with lies, To please the fools, and puzzle all the wise.” (3)
