Janus- the god of modern politics

In Roman mythology, there is a god named Janus. You are familiar with him- he is the god that has two faces that face away from each other. He was also the inspiration for the dual drama and comedy masks that symbolize the theater. Today, if there was a god who symbolized the state of modern politics, Janus would be it.

I feel sorry for any new politician today, including President Obama. The American public has set such high double standards that it is impossible to make us happy. We want a maverick who is strong enough to do what he thinks is right, but who follows the fickle will of the people. We want someone who will create change, but not take any risks. We want a stronger and better nation, but only if it doesn t cost us anything. We want a brighter future for our children, but not if it means any sacrifice on our parts today. We want everything that we want and we want it now, but with no responsibility for the consequences. We want to be heard and to be obeyed, but not to be held accountable. We want our leaders to go out on a limb, but to crucify them if the result is anything other than a resounding success.

Today s politics is only truly attractive to two types of people- those who would enter it for their own personal gain, or those who are zealots to a self-righteous cause. Neither care about the will of the people. Both will do whatever it takes to get what they want because the end justifies the means. Anyone else gets chewed up and spit out because no matter what they do they can t win. They are destroyed by their care and concern for the welfare of others. They try to make everyone happy, so they make no one happy. And they get tossed out on their butts in favor of someone who will put on whichever mask the public requires him to in order to get elected, while keeping his true face hidden.

Until America gets real about who we are, what we want, what we are willing to sacrifice in order to get it and who we want to be as a people and a nation, we will continue to get the lackluster public servants that we create and we deserve.

Here here! Right on the spot! I would say personally that “civil servants” are no longer “civl” nor “servants” to the American public.
