Hurray for the American “Patriots”

Much is being made of the vocal, paranoid few that supposedly speak for ‘all Americans’. They are being patted on the back by their brethren on the right as ‘patriots’ and ‘defenders of the First Amendment.’ I can only shake my head and feel embarrassed for them. It s unseemly, it s uncivil, and, frankly, it s plain ugly.

Where was the paranoia and skepticism of our government s actions when the administration at that time was lying to us to get us into 2 wars that we could not afford, had no business being in, and are now in danger of losing? When the Dixie Chicks stood up on a stage and made anti-war statements, they and their families had their lives threatened. Where were commentators like Rush or Glenn, when it came to defending the Dixie Chicks First Amendment rights?

Where were the ‘patriots’ when the first TARP bill got rammed down our throats, even though it was clear in the polls that the American public did not approve? Where was the concern about deficits and the welfare of our children s financial future when the government sent out a bunch of puny $400 checks? Don t remember any protests about that one’¦

Where were the ‘patriots’ who want to keep government out of the private lives of its citizens when the government was trying to force Terry Schiavo s husband to keep her alive, even hinting that he killed her and was trying to cover up his crime? Where were the ‘patriots’ when the pictures from Abu Gharib were seen around the world, while at the same time America was trying to tell other countries like that they need to value and respect human rights? And when those who support what the president is trying to do are called ‘stupid,’ ‘communists,’ ‘un-American,’ and worse, and they are being screamed down, where are the defenders of their First Amendment rights?

Funny, I don t remember Fox News pundits saying anything critical about any of that’¦I don t remember people screaming at public officials and calling them names and saying the kind of things that people have said about our current president’¦Funny how that is’¦

The difference between now and then, besides the Right using every opportunity to stir the pot and manipulate the public to distance itself from its 8 years of failure, is that people were fat and happy then. Now, they may have to cut back from spending money they don t have and live a more realistic lifestyle. THAT S why they re angry, and they want someone to blame and the Right is there pointing the finger. How sad is that, and how selfish. It goes to show that the American public s primary concern at the end of the day is themselves, not the greater good of all or the greater good of this country. It is a mass version of ME, ME, ME- everyone else be damned.

And they have the nerve to call themselves ‘patriots’? Patriots fight FOR something, something of honor worth dying for. What are these ‘patriots’ willing to die for? They aren t even FOR anything. And where is the honor?

I am ashamed by the behavior of many of my fellow Americans, God-fearing, Christ-loving bunch that they are. Maybe instead of going out to scream at people who are trying to do something, they need to stay home, pick up the Bible, and actually read it. Not rely on someone else s regurgitations on it, like they do about the events of the day. Maybe they would actually be shocked into shame by the words of Christ and what He tried to teach, and that many of us still have a need to learn. I worry about the future of this nation, but for very different reasons than these ‘patriots’ do.
