Consti here coming to you from the bunker BBQ pit where we are preparing for the 4th of July festivities. This year since we are in a new state that doesn’t allow even sparklers we have had to tone down the 2 hour fireworks display we usually put on. But never fear intrepid party goers there is plenty of good food and cold beer at the ready. This year it’s a whole roasted pig, tader salad, corn, apple pie, brats, burgers, and a host of other goodies awaiting our men and women in uniform. While you are all partying this year I hope you lift your glass in a toast to all those who serve this country in uniform. The point, is that you’re a phony patriot, just like you’re a phony intellectual and a phony “Constitutionalist”. Just seeing your name in the comment section of an article espousing the foundational principles and honored proponents of it made me cringe.
Those you criticize as well as those you extol fought for those principles, save Kerry, with his self inflicted “shrapnel injury from his grenade, that required a spray of Bactine and a 2″ X 3″ band aid (which was said to be overkill) the next day at sick call (Purple Heart Mockery), and Bronze Star for his boat being under fire, although most everyone agrees there was only friendly fire directed away from him, and his personal video and photo crew taking posed pictures, and throwing somebody else’s medals away like garbage for political media attention, please. The height of ignorance. Proclaim your patriotism and love of a country based on freedom by bashing and insulting those who don’t think exactly like you do. Absolutely disgraceful! A Patriot is a lover of their country who rebukes and does not excuse their nations sins. Fredrick Douglas said that and we would all do well to remember it.
And before you question my patriotism I will tell you I have supported the Vietnam Veterans of America, the VFW and it has been my distinct pleasure to make the acquaintance of hundreds of veterans. Some of the most incredible conversations have been with Second World War warriors, hearing their stories and keeping them alive. I’ve even had the great honor and privilege to seeing the firsthand accounts of some First World War soldiers and to tell their stories. Through all of it, I’ve never once heard any of them say someone was less of an American than they were. Of Course that seems to be the conservatives favorite play, diminish the service and question the patriotism of anyone who doesn’t agree with us. Case in point, John Kerry, who after graduating college was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and requested duty on river boats that would take him to Vietnam. After his time in the Navy he came home and protested the war, after seeing it first had he decided he didn’t support what was happening. How about John Murtha? A full Colonel in the Marine Corps he served combat tours in both Korea and Vietnam before being elected to congress. He’s patriotism has been repeatedly questioned because when things were going badly in Iraq he called for the war to end. After serving in two wars, I think he had some perspective on the matter. Max Cleland was branded a coward and lost his Senate seat. He only lost both legs and an arm in service to his country. He obviously wouldn’t know a thing about courage. And last but not least, Al Gore, after graduating Harvard was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and lead an infantry platoon in combat in Vietnam. Apparently none of their service and perspective, having seen war first hand, matters. They weren’t in lock step with the drumbeat for a war under dubious circumstances so they couldn’t possibly be patriots. After all, all they did was get shot at for their country.
