Consti here coming from the Bunker labs where political scientists are scratching their heads at the latest to come out of the White House.  President Obama has announced he is re-constituting his political team that helped put him in office. His former campaign staff will help with national democratic races in an attempt to quell the further defections in his own party and take greater control over the mid terms nationwide.

We now see Barak Obama Candidate-in-chief. David Axelrod said; “We are going to evaluate what we need to do to get timely intelligence and early warnings so we don’t face situations like we did in Massachusetts.” This means in political speech we don’t want to be caught again with our pants down. Massachusetts was a wakeup call for the White House and the Democrats. A realization that they do not have a mandate from the people as they assumed they did. However by taking control of national campaigns the White House is in effect telling the Democrats running for re-election you can’t do it without me. But the jaw-dropper is Marion Berry’s claim that President Obama personally dismissed any comparison between Democrats now and under Bill Clinton 16 years ago — by saying his personal popularity would bail everybody out.

“The president himself, when that was brought up in one group, said, ‘Well, the big difference here and in ’94 was you’ve got me.”

Again an example of the arrogance coming out of this White House when in a recent poll a new Gallup poll concludes that President Obama is the most polarizing first-year president since the organization started surveying job approval in 1953. Wasn’t he supposed to change that? Wasn’t he supposed to be the great uniter? Didn’t we hear campaign promises of bi-partisan co-operation from candidate Obama? Isn’t this the same man that has broken promises he made as a candidate? Yet Obama will be sent out into “fly-over country” a lot more in 2010 to stump for Democratic candidates. The telling issue will be how many incumbents accept the Presidents interference in their campaigns.

This change in tactics also brings up another issue of his leadership. Isn’t the President supposed to be running the country instead of local campaigns? While he is out stumping for the Democrats this year who is running the country? Wouldn’t a leader have other more pressing matters than ensuring his political party maintains power? I thought we elected him to lead, not perpetually campaign. He can’t even address elementary kids without a teleprompter.

After a year of performance by President Obama the American public holds him at about 47 to 50% approval rating. Depending of course which poll you read. Does it make sense for this President to take control of national campaigns? Obama the “fighter” will again be out on the campaign trail instead of “fighting” for policy and legislation to help the unemployed who have been suffering for a year while he dithers with healthcare.

Republicans will tie Democrats to this lack of jobs and failed Healthcare legislation. This will be even easier with Obama out there stumping for their campaign. The American public will have unemployment fresh in their minds since nothing has been done to quell it. The fact that Healthcare is number 4 on the things that the public are concerned about after jobs, deficit spending, and terrorism won’t help matters either. Candidate-in-Chief is on the job.

Will the 08 election ever stop for him?

Clinton was very successful by campaigning non-stop after 1994 but he had Newt and company watching the store (and the bottom line). Obama has Pelosi and Reid. The more he is gone , the more seats the Democrats will lose.
Good piece.
