Hats off to Majority Leader Harry Reid. It took him over a year, but he finally apologized for his off-color comments about our President when Mr. Obama was still an Illinois Senator. In 2008, he used the words to describe Obama as “light skinned” and “with no Negro dialect.”
Let’s compare this to Trent Lott’s 2002 comment that was made about Strom Thurman at the latter’s birthday party:
“I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years, either.”
To me, Reid’s comments seem so much worse. But if you want to play the racially insensitive comparison game, I guess it would be up for grabs which comments would be harder to swallow and deemed more bigoted, depending on your perspective. But that’s not my point for today. What stands out to me is the difference in media reaction to the two events.
After 48 years of serving his senatorial post, Trent Lott was crucified daily on every news source you can think of. He was, basically, run out of town on a rail and strongarmed into early retirement. Reid’s comments, on the other hand, were barely breathed loudly enough for us to notice, unless you’re into reading a one-paragraph report on page 26. And, to make matters more intriguing, he is only apologizing now. Apparently not because he regrets making the statements (otherwise he should have made his regret public immediately afterwards), but because he must have picked up a copy of a Rasmussen poll report and saw that his Nevada popularity was entering the last go-around of flushed water in the toilet bowl. Perhaps he can reach in and grab the excrement before it completely disappears, pour a little bleach on it, and hold it up at his next announcement to try to dupe his constituents into thinking it is something else.
It’s bigotry. Pure and simple. And we have, yet again, another ubiquitous case of media bias. If a Republican – like Mitch McConnell, for example – had said this about Obama, it would have been on every major network and liberal blog twenty four seven. There would have been hourly demands for his resignation as well as tons of “signed” petitions requesting the culprit to step down.
On the flip side, what did we hear from our “equitable” media steamroller after Reid’s comments?
(This)
I get such a kick out of organizations like Media Matters who are so blatantly slanted but who will consistently cry “foul” against the s0-called “Conservative Media”. If the media is conservative, then we are in worse shape than I thought. There is MSNBC with the dynamic duo of Olbermann and Maddow. Yet many of these same people constantly criticize Fox News (aka Faux News by some) for being unfair and unbalanced. Whether this is true or not (I basically never watch the Fox News Channel), they surely couldn’t hold a candle to the other two outfits I just mentioned.
Even Al Sharpton has accepted Harry Reid’s apology. But, of course! Instead of conducting his normal anti-white lynch mob down the streets of television city, he has apparently decided to bridle his tongue and take one on the chin for the purpose of partisan politics. We have known his true colors, however, for a very long time.
Thank goodness for alternative media sources who will actually report news-worthy issues. Sources who will actually call Senator Reid on the carpet for his stench. Perhaps some Nevadans with backbone can inform their neighbors of the things that their tv and radio stations won’t about their Senator. Will it matter? One can only hope.

Erick,
I was surprised to only recently have heard Reids remarks.
Sadly, I’m not at all surprised at the low key release of that info..
Conservatives would allow such a person who made these remarks to be destroyed, it’s our principle, hell we’d help the libs fry him.
Libs are primarily interested in keeping power, not principle. But mums the word on that issue.
